Tyler Webb of Stony Pond Farm in Enosburg Falls, Vt., discusses soil health during a farm tour on July 9. Nate Severy, owner of Purple Barn Farm in Cornwall, Vt., describes their pasture irrigation system during a farm tour on June 25. This summer, University of Vermont Extension’s Future-Ready Dairy Tours brought farmers, researchers, service providers and community members together to explore how Vermont dairy farms are preparing for the future. Severy is working with Vermont Extension’s Champlain Valley Crop, Soil and Pasture team on a research trial to evaluate the system’s effectiveness. Their farm team — including family, advisers, service providers and nutrition consultants — all contributed to the tour and conversation around how the farm has navigated recent challenges; adapted to the inherent risks associated with dairy farming; and used information, technology and other resources to move forward.
